I hate them. I don’t go into their house, and if I did, I would expect her to try and kill me. Conversely, if they come into my house, they can expect similar treatment.

I can relate! I had a spider phobia most of my life. It's better now. I recently had a rather large one plop down on my arm after I turned off the lights. What the f@#&k was that? Turned on the lights and yup...a big hairy thing. I was actually able to catch and release it. I just can't kill 'm. Yesterday I popped outside with the dog only to see a tarantula hanging out on the wall right next to the door. Exclaiming a loud "Damn!" Ahh California!

Yes! California has a whole other sphere of danger, but at least there's not the wet, shiny element to deal with. Kudos if "Damn" was all you said, and didn't shriek embarrassingly as I know I would.

My ex once had me come over during the work day -- a 1 hour metro trip -- so I could deal with a cricket in her bathroom.

I used to have big ol Palmetto bugs creep into my apt in Atlanta. There was a big gap under the door. I thought I might try to get some tiny leashes and take them on a walk.

I am with you on this, having lived in New Orleans and many years in Texas, the water bugs and cockroaches are definitely larger and a terror that doesn’t go away. So I am amazed that there are so many up north, in cold weather. Well done in writing this and in exterminating.

What I remember about upstate NY was "sweat bugs"...in summer. I guess they were gnats? They didn't appear til we ran around and worked up a sweat, it seemed. Those water bugs in the city were so big you could hear their footsteps. One thing good about frisco...too cold for bugs.

I think we call stink bugs Shield Bugs here, although I've never smelt them badly they smother my raspberries in the Summer!

When you come back to live here you'll look back at them lovingly after you discover the Daddy Long Legs!
