As it happens, a few months ago I'd been listening to this just an hour before I happened to sit down at the table next to Lenny Kaye at B&H Dairy. I told him of the serendipitous coincidence and he responded that he loves your cover and that, not surprisingly, the song resonates even more now that we're getting up there in years--offering words of wisdom he could hardly have appreciated fully back when he wrote them. As if on cue, the very next day Tom Verlaine died and, oh, how the darkness doubled. I took some solace, though--and perhaps Lenny did, too--in "The Things You Leave Behind."
Hi Marty, Lenny's song did indeed cross my mind! But it made me too sad with all the loss lately, I might have to write a more lighthearted one. I remember the first time I heard it was when Lenny played it solo at Robert Quine's memorial at CBs gallery. That was 2004, so almost twenty years ago now, and the losses were only just getting started. Thanks so much for your comment.
Oh god I know it too well - I have a whole house still in storage in LA since beginning of pandemic... love your Things We Leave Behind song. Beautiful.
Anytime I share a storage space story I'm always relieved to hear other's tales! And thanks regarding the song, that was written by Lenny Kaye and seems to become even more relevant as time goes on.
Funny you should ask Clarke - we JUST bought some cassettes and a player for Eric's granddaughter's thirteenth birthday (ssshhh). Will the Circle ever Be Unbroken? As Fred Willard says in A Mighty Wind: "I don't think so!"
Lordy, I wish I had your energy!! :)
Think what we could've accomplished if we'd just stayed in one place Mel!
Just wonderful ... but how could you possibly have gotten all the way through it without a link to this?!
