I’m sitting in my office as I read your story this morning. I was captivated and hanging on to every word. I’m grateful my phone didn’t ring and disturb my moment of indulgence reading the travels of a superb writer!

Thank you Sharon, I'm glad you had a quiet moment too.

I used to spend a lot of time in Toronto, owing to a boyfriend who went to school there. I’m sure everything I used to know is gone (including the El Mocambo).

It used to seem like a cool place and there still looked to be some interesting areas but yikes the development is mind-boggling!

Windsor, Ontario, was across the bridge from Detroit. When I was editor of Creem in 1975 I drove over on weekends, listening to CKLW, one of North America's great AM radio stations. Even with long hair and all, customs just waved my car through. The axle in my 1972 Chevy Impala started to drag and spark as I drove way out into the rural Ontario countryside with a Creem-mate, and I don't know we made it back to Birmingham, Mich., before the axle broke! I love Toronto, too.

I loved America so much more when I lived in Italy. It’s like the weight is off you.

I remember that feeling from France, Tony. I truly appreciated things that would probably have been annoyances up close.

well, we were listening to the same live radio set, at the same time - and it was OUTSTANDING!! that hazel is a GREAT bass player! and i will use a word i think is over-used: awesome!! michigan has some nice fall areas!! had i know you were headed to Leland, i would have recommended my buddy Tobin Sprout's art gallery, there! he was in Guided By Voices - maybe he was involved in the songwriter's conference?? his art is really as good as his songs.

good for you - getting around the country!!

the same sad echo, xxxcm

That's so interesting Clarke! What's the gallery called (I can look it up of course) - I'll be here one more day so maybe will be able to stop by.

Tiny little connection: my wife & I have been doing "Music League" on Spotify, where you choose songs based on various criteria and share them with other people. Anyway, we were just listening to Cory Hanson's "Ghost Ship" last night; it was on her shortlist of best songs of 2023. So cool to think of your daughter playing with that band now.

Incredible band, Paul! Hope you get a chance to see them on this tour but I know they're not hitting every city- Chicago tomorrow night.

Thanks. Lovely as always. Poignant as usual. I must see you live someday.

Thanks Greg - hopefully I'll do more touring when a new album comes out - and another book of course.

Lovely as always, are your really moving to the UK? I am contemplating moving back to Holland. hmm...It becomes more and more attractive.

Eric has grandchildren there and we spend a lot of time in the UK so...would rather simplify. It's not judgment on anywhere else, everywhere has its problems! And nowhere is definitive for us, it's been a good stretch in NY.

Family matters for sure! It looks like a nice spot too in the UK. Yep.... everywhere is the same. I even wrote a song about that!
