It IS really beautiful. I’m a scarf person. In fact, I did a double take when I saw the subject in your essay just now, because I literally just spent a half hour poking around online trying to find the replacement for a favorite scarf my sister bought for me a couple of years ago. It disappeared last fall when I was on a trip to the desert. I called every hotel and restaurant where I wore that scarf, but to no avail. I think I figured out the maker of the scarf but not the exact duplicate. I decided to order one that has a very similar color palette and theme. It’s even being shipped from the UK. Fortunately it’s not expensive. I know it won’t be the same, but hoping it fills the hole the old one left.
Oh I'm glad you found a replacement Janet - there is a particular pain in taking a treasured item on a trip and leaving it...somewhere! As if it jumped ship and went off to live another life.
I think that asking someone else to repair it, if such a thing is possible, is a cool idea Monica- someone recommended this British TV show that does just that to treasured heirlooms. Don't know if this qualifies as an heirloom but...I know if it's up to me I feel like I have a million other things to do before I'd get around to it so, maybe there's an expert out there somewhere.
Oh, I love watching The Repair Shop (I have a friend who lives near where it's filmed, in fact). I have done some significant repairs on things myself, which has been quite meaningful. And, a few months ago, I gave the copy of Louisa May Alcott's Eight Cousins that belonged to my grandmother to a conservator to repair it for me. I have found both repairing myself and hiring an expert to repair something to feel really good, to recognize things that I value.
Besides the greater quality, the old scarf has the advantage of memories embedded within it. I'm hoping the new one can start to build up a story resume. Who knows, maybe it will become the scarf that heralds the triumph of "Girl to Country."
Thanks Bob. I don't think I've ever tried to keep an old item of clothing going by replacing it with the same thing. We'll see, thanks for the vote of confidence!
You never ever ever have to let go of the original, and please don’t or I’ll be mad at you 🤭 I’m a scarfoholic--not now or ever recovering--so I speak with some authority: keep the original. And that’s an order ‼️
Absolutely right Mary Lee - even if it has to sit behind plexiglass like the artifact it is! Scarfoholics unite! (sounds like people who like to eat but we know what we mean)
Thank you so much, now I see it. I was looking for a ‘Met’ Icon within the overlapping loops of white border— I was trying too hard! Amazing find! Amazing that you almost nearly found the same-ish artifact!
Oh, it is beautiful! It has personality, probably from holding all the secrets and joys it's experienced with you. The new one will, too, but it will take time <3
Wonderful, Don! I must learn this song - love Donovan. And gosh you're right about that guitar. It's been about 20 years since I got it. Lots of wear in those two decades. x
Needs to be broken in. Like that J-45 of yours. I remember when that was shiny and new. Save the old one scarf! I miss my old dark red shirt with tiny pink flowers. Why didn't I keep a piece of it?

Museum gift shop scarves are the best! I'm wearing a William Morris print one right now, in fact.
Perhaps you can address the repair work as a gift to yourself--either do it yourself or find someone else to do it?

can’t quite find the subtle metropolitan logo worked into the elder scarf… any tips?
Trying to share a photo detail but...lower right hand corner, just below the gold border, in white type!

Yes - I need to remember that Jenny!

Thank you, yes!
Awww..you can tag team wear them. And it is especially beautiful..I would have kept it too.
Thanks Eline - yes, maybe a rotation during the breaking in period?
